BEHIND THE ADVISOR

Lianne Sheplar has been an art advisor with Barbara Schwartz, Inc. since 2012.

She has managed major collections of contemporary art and advised new and experienced collectors on acquisitions and sales of museum-quality work. With extensive experience in advising estates on deaccessioning their collections, Lianne has worked with individual clients to develop strategies around the sale and/or donation of works. From advising collectors and estates on cataloguing, conservation, storage, and framing, to executing market research and negotiating contracts, Lianne is a passionate advocate for her clients.

Lianne’s lifelong engagement with art began at an early age with her father, a bronze artist, who taught her the principles of drawing and painting. Her education continued with a minor in art history while completing a Bachelor’s degree in classical music performance at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Pursuing her graduate studies in art history at Hunter College in New York City, Lianne focused on Modern and Contemporary Art with an emphasis on international histories of contemporary work, particularly India, where she had lived for several years. Supplementing her artistic knowledge, Lianne also had a professional advisory practice at Merrill Lynch for two years, where she gained extensive knowledge of the financial markets and developed skills that have greatly benefitted her clients.

An active participant in the New York art community, Lianne is a member of the Junior Associates of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. She is a founding member of the India Center Foundation’s Visual Art Initiative, and is an associate member of the Association of Professional Art Advisors.
